My leaves don’t look like his …

fall leaves-2 11-2009 November 18, 2009.  While most people living in northern climes have had about enough of the falling leaves already, others know how to turn, what I see as future leaf mold, into art.  See Christoph Niemann's vision of leaves on his blog at The New York Times.  I'm kind of partial to Ernie and Birch and the acid washed 80's jeans.  After you check out his leaves, visit some of his previous posts - Lego is good one.  BTW his website is cool too.

Get Composting

October 5, 2009.  Anyone who has ever … in the slightest … questioned whether compost is valuable, please take a look at the photo at the top of the New York Times article about the composting practices at Harvard University.  Look at the darkness and richness of the soil plug dug from a heavily walked-upon lawn area at Harvard.  That's the kind of soil all of us should strive for.  It doesn't come in a bag of highly marketed "miracle" chemicals, or from applying the latest/newest/greatest perfect lawn technologies.  Harvard's lawns come from good, solid organic gardening … really.

Late Blight Update

Since my original late blight post (July 6, 2009 after listening to a web seminar conducted by Cornell University), I've seen many updates regarding the spread of this highly contagious fungus.  The most recent, Outbreak of Fungus Threatens Tomato Crop, in the New York Times, highlights conditions in a hard hit region in New York state.  Similar articles have run in The Boston Globe and The Hartford Courant, and on local newscasts (There's a Fungus Among Us).
