Autumn is the time of year to wander through wooded and natural areas with sharp eyes focused on the little things.

Little things such as an intricate forest of moss surrounding a glacier-deposited rock.

The symmetry of seed pods standing tall in remembrance of the flowers that once were.

A lichen-draped boulder that anchors a planted bed during flower-showy summer months, but takes center stage during autumn.

Be thankful for these little things … the things we often take for granted.

Be thankful for the simple beauty that surrounds you, be it lichen, moss and seed pods, or a child's soft cheek, or the hand-hold of a loved one.

Just be thankful.

Winter may be just days away, but my gardens still offer a touch of holiday cheer.  And, with Mother Nature holding off our snow I was able to capture some season's greetings … in expected and unexpected places.

Pieris japonica 'Compacta' … Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' … Ilex meserveae 'Blue Maid' cheerily brighten grey cold days.

Christmas ferns … native mosses … and santolina are contrasts in green.

Shades of browns from a lovely beech … miscanthus grasses … and acorns dotting the ground.

But sometimes holiday cheer comes unexpectedly like below, in leaves of tiny stonecrop sedum, it's greener cousin, and the pink-tinged edges of euonymus.

Finally, even a mish-mosh of of grapevines, mountain laurel, dried hydrangea, a couple of strands of LED lights, and an old whiskey barrel can bring holiday cheer.

Bon hiver … happy winter … to all.
