Gardening Oops – February 2010

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.  That's my gardening oops this month.  Here at joene's garden, the first of each month is Gardening oops -  GOOPs for short – Day. On GOOPs day, I fess up one of my gardening blunders in the hopes that you might avoid a GOOPs of your own after reading one of mine.  I figure we all learn from our mistakes, and often from mistakes of others.  So why not share our mistakes with each other and, therefore, enhance everyone's overall chance to learn.

Pre-frost action

A quick walk through the yard today added urgency to my pre-frost list of to-dos.  Last night's temperature dropped low enough to slightly burn the top edges of a cherry tomato plant - the temperature at 6:30 am was 39 degrees – so a good hard freeze is not too far off.  So what's done and what's left on my to do list?

First plantings – outside and in

I managed to get the first set of seeds planted outside before today's rain began.  The combination of thawed planting beds and forecasts for heavy rains over the next few days makes for optimal planting conditions for cold-hardy seeds.  I planted two varieties of peas; my favored Carouby de Maussane snow peas which turn beautiful purple flowers into tasty, crisp morsels, and the new-to-me Snowflake pea pods.  I started with one sowing of each planted in pots sunk into one of the vegetable garden beds.  Three additional long, narrow planters now hold the promise of Cherry Belle and French Breakfast radishes, and Winter Density and New Red Fire lettuces.  I'm determined to reap vegetables from my planting beds in spite of my population of hungry voles (see 'Think outside of the plot' below).
