Cool days and nights and overcast skies marked the first half of June in south central Connecticut. Nearly daily rain of some amount interspersed with heavy downpours and strong thunderstorms kept soils consistently wet. Pansies, loving the cool temperatures, still bloom. Ferns and mosses thrive in the nearly constant moisture. The peonies were glorious, but short-lived – just as the biggest blossoms opened wide rains pelted them down. The last of my peony blossoms will go by this week, but later blooming iris are coming on strong along with many other happy blossoms to show on Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2010.

Last June my peonies were in full glory. This year everything seems to be blooming about 2 weeks earlier compared to last. I also had poppies blooming in 2009. This year the greens are there but, sadly, no buds popped up.

Be sure to visit Carol at May Dreams Gardens – the originator of Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - to see what she has popping from her soils and what other garden bloggers - from all corners of the U.S. and beyond – have to show off on this monthly bloomin' blossom bash.

Looking for something rather unusual … something deer don't seem to eat? Try growing this unique bulb Allium «Hair.» How this bulb came to be named Hair is pretty obvious. I wouldn't exactly describe the blooms as flowers but more cartoon character-ish. Were there a remake of Fantasia, I could see a crop of blooming «Hair» transformed into out-there groupies digging a jazz improv skit.

I first planted «Hair» about four years ago in a partly sunny spot (about 4-5 hours a day). It has done fine here - established itself enough to shoot up numerous freaky blossoms and, this year it has been blooming for two weeks (the photo above was taken on 7-1-09). But, I have to stake the 24 inch slender stems to prevent the blossoms from flopping, so I suspect my «Hair» will be more robust if planted where it receives more sun and where it will grab the attention deserved by such an unique blossom. I can see this blub planted in front of a green backdrop, but under a low growing shrub – one that will allow the slender stems to grow right through its branches, hold the stems upright, and allow the blossoms to dance above the bush where they can gently sway in the breeze, much the way a sea anemone's arms gently sway with the ebb and flow of the sea.

Allium «Hair» is available from John Scheepers (page 67 in the Fall 2009 Beauty from Bulbs catalog … Allium «Hair.»

I'm curious … is anyone else is growing «Hair?» How does your «Hair» grow?
