Houseplants: old friends and new

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMy houseplants receive minimal care – sometimes  neglect – while I'm preoccupied with outdoor gardening. But almost without fail, they thrive. They seem to know that my attention will again focus their way when cold nights turn to cold days and forces the bulk of my gardening attention inside. My houseplants understand that they  - not the showy iris or the ripening tomatoes - sooth my gardening urges when most everything on the outside of the glass is winter brown or covered with glistening snow.

Yikes! It’s December!

Wow, talk about sneaking up on me. Last night I went to bed with my head still firmly planted in November. This morning I awoke to December. How did the last month of 2010 sneak up on me? I'm not prepared for winter's chill or winter's snow and this is my confession, my gardening faux pas, my Gardening Oops or GOOPs for short. Today, being the first of December, marks my day to share a gardening blunder, or in the case of this month, a gardener's procrastination.

Thankful for sage

I'm thankful for so many things, for example a loving family; good health; the ability to garden, read, and see and to listen to birds sing, wind blow, and ocean waves break on-shore; the rights I'm afforded by living in the U.S., and you, my readers. But when I'm preparing Thanksgiving dinner, and specifically the homemade stuffing that traditionally goes into our turkey, I can't help but sing praises for common sage (Salvia officinalis).
