Autumn Joys, part deux
Now is the time to get out and enjoy the last of the fall colors in southern Connecticut. While outside wandering … whether aimlessly or not … look high to grab a mental snapshot of New England's breathtaking fall colors. But also look down to take note of color changes lower to the ground. Often, perennial plantings put on their own show each fall. Low-growing sedum, once bright green, now displays it's autumn hues.

Getting into the gardener’s head …
This is what author Michael Pollan says about his documentary The Botany of Desire … it is very much about getting in our heads, according to his interview in the most recent Organic Gardening. PBS will air the documentary Wednesday, October 28 at 8 pm. The film is based on Pollan's book of the same name, and if you take the time to follow the preview link, you'll see the photography alone makes the show a must watch.

Attracting Bluebirds
October 23, 2009. If you need a good reason to plant more natives in your landscape, keep in mind that doing so will help attract bluebirds. Bluebirds are attracted to berry-bearing trees and shrubs, such as dogwood, shadbush, and high bush cranberry, according to a Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CT DEP) fact sheet. Check it out to learn other plants and shrubs that attract bluebirds, plus other important bluebird facts, breeding and nesting particulars, and how to build and situate bluebird nesting boxes. And, if you are part of an organized group looking for a cool project, you can reserve the wood for bluebird nesting boxes from CT DEP … but hurry, it's on a first come, first served basis.
