Rain drenched Connecticut blooms

Connecticut's weather cannot make up its mind. Spring began cold and wet, remained well into May, then turned hot, humid and dry. Everything waiting to bloom rapidly burst into color. Then, almost as quickly, faded.

I cannot resist sharing some of the blossoms that have come and gone since May's Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day so here's quick tour of the blooms of the last four weeks .

Late May 2011:

Amsonia Blue Star, columbine and stachys. Clematis  and rhododendron

black and the lovely Beverly Sills.

Oriental poppy and peony made a brief show.

Early June:

Globe allium and scabiosa joined the late May party and still show their purple hues today.

Before the rain of the last two days I caught this shrub rose accompanied by lavender ready to pop.

Nasturtium bloom in yellow and soft orange, campanula blue and pink pinks show off beneath the good old lavender blossoms of sage, salvia nemorosa and Louisiana iris add deep purple hues while penstemon holds white blossoms tall, and lavender and late iris are ready to burst into full show. But with rain keeping my camera inside, these flowers will have to remain in the gardener's imagination.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day is the brain child of Carol at May Dreams Gardens. She graciously hosts this web-wide garden party on the 15th of each month. Head to May Dreams Gardens to catch a glimpse of the lovely blossoms gardeners from all over the world share on this day.

Happy June … Happy Gardening.

Beauiful! I also felt distressed about the variable spring we had. Things bloomed, but unhappily and late. The amsonias had wan colored blooms, the camassias were too pale, everything looked anemic and brief. And I have an alternate-year blooming pink dogwood, and this was the off year. With low light, gray skies and confused blooms, it all felt odd. But still a thrill to see what does come out each year!

Laurrie, I think our plants are as confused as we are ... it feels like spring, then mid-summer, and now we're back at early spring. I'm afraid this is our new normal and we'll have to enjoy the flowers the moment they burst open lest we miss thier show.

Gorgeous blooms here...reading your older post, learning to live with beneficial snakes has been the HARDEST thing for me to do....holy crap is an understatement!

Darla, I'm not sure how well I'd learn to live with snakes if I lived in your region. I really am snake-phobic to the core.

Beautiful! It has been a very strange spring...makes me wonder what summer will be like. Will it be very hot, humid, and dry or will it be hot one day and cool the next? Your purple allium has such a lovely color....very nice!

Love those blues. Clematis! Some day I will grow one successfully. Love northern gardens.

I concur, very strange weather this spring. Everything is late. Plus, plants are blooming, then gone quickly. It is supposed to be getting back to normal, but we have storms moving in again. Just not enough sun this year. You do have some pretty blooms this post. Glad the weather let you take the shots. I took mine a few days early to jump between the rains. Happy GBBD!

Joene, I'm realizing how lucky I was with the timing of our weather here. I arrived in Maine on what turned out to be the last day of several weeks of rain and was lucky to have a couple of weeks of dry, sunny weather while I furiously weeded and mulched flower beds. Then, we had torrential thunderstorms that got everything thoroughly watered, followed by two hot days when many of the plants in your photos suddenly popped into bloom. Cool, rainy days followed, which kept everything in its just-starting-to-bloom stage. Then the sun came out and temps warmed just in time for some new blooms and bloom day photos. I hope your weather settles down soon.

Paul, I think amsonia is underused. Everyone who sees it in my gardens loves it. Thanks for stopping by.

I wanted to thank you for stopping by my blog for GBBD. I don't have a way yet to respond automatically for new comments from me or anybody really. so I hope its alright here. I hope to see you again for GBBD if not sooner. I hope you'll get a chance to read one or more of my little stories about gardening and small town life. Again thanks for visiting and again I love amsonia and like you folks don't use it enough I think.
