Dear Connecticut Gardeners

Yes we are all facing scenes like this …

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Four feet of snow on the ground from one month's worth of storms tends to get the gardener's spirits down.

But we are a hardy bunch.

Just keep repeating, 'Next month we can say spring starts next month.'

And before we know it our lives will again be filled with color.

I appreciate the attempt at optimism (and I like your last photo)... but.... we still have all of February to go! And it can snow in March too. This has already been a winter to remember and there is still a lot of it left. Kinda pretty, though.

Laurrie,
Repeat after me ... February is a state of mind. In February we can say spring starts next month. Ohmmmmm.

After just spending a few hours helping hubby try to get some of the snow and ice off of the roof, I definitely need a little reminder that spring is around the corner.

I also did my fair share of roof clearing and snow management today, Debbie ... all in preparation for the next storm. Since we cannot stop or alter the snow we might as well look for the best it has to offer. This amount of snow certainly gives us different views of our landscapes, and I still find its beauty facinating.

Joene, That is a lot of snow! Beautiful, but a lot of work. My experience in my Maine garden has been that heavy snow winters are followed by great garden seasons (maybe the combination of great winter protection for plants and lots of consistent moisture in spring as the snow melts and the plants start to grow); how's that for a silver lining?

Jean,
Thanks for that much needed bright spot at the end of a very long, deep white tunnel of snow.

It is quite beautiful and we've taken to just marveling at the depth of snow still on the ground. This is a record-breaker for Connecticut so we figure we should make the best of it ... and more is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Joene, That tunnel shot is beautiful - as I've been shoveling there is a definite blue tinge to the snow. Meanwhile, I've birthed my first ever ice dam, on a very high piece of roof - hoping the cavalry can get here before tomorrow!

Thanks, Cyndy. I think all of us have ice jams of varying sizes. It's a tough winter.
