I splurged.
I've been really good at not purchasing a lot of plants for my gardens this summer … too many other things to take care of and too little time. But when I ran across Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Summer Sorbet' with its showy green leaf variegation and striking electric blue blossoms, I caved.
I caved, came home, looked around for the right spot, identified two, then caved again. Summer Sorbet deux came to live here too.
My twin deciduous shrubs stand about 3 feet tall and wide. Both are a tad misshapen, but this minor issue will be easily remedied with a good late-winter pruning. The leaf variegation – in multiple shades of green, and the electric blue late-summer blossoms were just too much for me, and a host of bees, to resist.
And to complement this beauty and striking color is supposed deer resistance. I say supposed since I've heard this before. Only time will prove whether the deer in my locale actually find Miss Caryopteris unpalatable … keeping my fingers crossed.
My Caryopteris twins will sit on either side of the steps leading to my long front porch. They will join a few boxwood, some perennials (Louisiana Iris, mounds of Campanula carpatica, Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina), and other small perennials, and they'll add some much appreciated late season color to a spot that tends to look rather tired this time of year.
Have you splurged on a late summer purchase that you simply could not resist? What caught your eye?

Hi Joene, 'Summer Sorbet' is a beauty - can't blame you for wanting two! I've not bought plants recently, but have ordered more camassias for the meadow and seeds for my favorite new gomphrena 'Fireworks.'

Joene, Caryoptersis 'Summer Sorbet' is lovely. I don't know if I've ever seen her in person before but from your photos she doea look electric. I've indulged myself way too much this year...'Red Majestic' corylus, groundcover maple, several dwarf conifers...I would still like to get a hydrangea 'Quick Fire' before I call it quits this year and start dividing and transplanting. I have loads of Pennisetum that need some attention, plans are to widen a bed this weekend to accomodate them.

Cyndy, One of the things I won't be able to do this year is add more bulbs, which I will regret it in the spring. I've grown gomphrena in the past and love it, too. Thanks for the reminder to add it to my seed list.

Debbie, I think you would really like 'Summer Sorbet' ... it's such a happy plant. I love that you are expanding a bed to accomodate Pennisetum - a sign of a true garden geek. We expand beds rather than thin plants!

Joene, I'm just catching up with the last couple weeks of your blog. That is one gorgeous blue flower. I almost caved in to a caryopteris (different variety) at a local nursery a couple of weeks ago. The pieris shrub that was growing in my Gettysburg garden when I left in May 2009 seems to have died, and I am tempted to put caryopteris in its place. I've decided to wait, however, and see if the pieris shows any signs of reviving now that we've had some rain.

Jean, you may still want to find a spot for the variegated caryopteris ... two weeks since these photos and the shrubs till have lots of gorgeous blue flowers.
