June Blooms
Cool days and nights and overcast skies marked the first half of June in south central Connecticut. Nearly daily rain of some amount interspersed with heavy downpours and strong thunderstorms kept soils consistently wet. Pansies, loving the cool temperatures, still bloom. Ferns and mosses thrive in the nearly constant moisture. The peonies were glorious, but short-lived – just as the biggest blossoms opened wide rains pelted them down. The last of my peony blossoms will go by this week, but later blooming iris are coming on strong along with many other happy blossoms to show on Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2010.
A trio of scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue'
Trandescantia of unknown variety … traveled with me for years from house to house.
Dianthus deltoides, or Maiden Pinks 'Arctic Fire'
An ever lovely hosta … I don't recall hosta blooming this early before.
Louisiana iris 'Black Gamecock'
Peony hybrid 'Nancy Nora' dancing with Stachys (Lamb's Ear).
Allium 'Hair' shows off a unique personality.
Hydrangea Endless Summer flirting with nearby astilbe.
Coral bells … another long time plant companion.
A sea of lavenders. Can one ever have too many lavenders?
Iris ensata – unknown variety with huge blossoms. I cannot have too many iris.
The dainty shrub rose Mystic Meidiland.
Rose campion always has a mind of its own.
And I fell for the new supertunia 'Pretty Much Picasso' – the name alone is enough to attract attention, but I could not resist the color combination of these flowers.
Last June my peonies were in full glory. This year everything seems to be blooming about 2 weeks earlier compared to last. I also had poppies blooming in 2009. This year the greens are there but, sadly, no buds popped up.
Be sure to visit Carol at May Dreams Gardens – the originator of Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - to see what she has popping from her soils and what other garden bloggers - from all corners of the U.S. and beyond – have to show off on this monthly bloomin' blossom bash.

Beautiful blossoms for Bloom Day. Every year is different.
My kniphofias failed to have a single bloom for reasons of their own which they've not shared with me.
That supertunia has an interesting color combo.

The new supertunia is amazing! I want some! All of your blooms are lovely. I like your endless summer/ astilbe combo. Also love, love the Louisiana iris!

Joene, Your flowers are lovely. Everything is about two weeks ahead in my garden, too. My siberian irises are almost done. Even the late one called 'Yankee Doodle Boy' (presumably because it is true blue and «born on the 4th of July») is already blooming. Astilbe look like they're going to start in the next couple of days, and lots of hosta and most of my daylilies already have flower scapes.

Nell Jean: the weather continues to puzzle this year. We are now having typical spring weather - warm days and cool nights - in mid June when temperatures typically ramp up to more summer-like levels. You miss your kniphofias, I miss my poppies. Maybe next year.

Deb: I have two small section in my fenced in yard that get morning sun and afternoon shade. I filled one narrow bed with hosta and the other with a lacecap and an endless summer hydrangea. The white blooming astilbe thrives there also. One stem of the hydrangea is leaning into the astilbe and provided me with the nice photo op posted above. If I had a larger deer-protected area I'd have more hydrangea.

Glad you enjoyed the iris, Valerie and Carol. They have been spectacular this year so I really cannot complain too much about the weather - it brought me tons of beautiful iris - my favorite flower.

I'll watch for photos of your iris, Jean, so I can continue to enjoy them after mine have passed. My astilbe are opening as I write, and my daylillies have just started to open.

All of your flowers are gorgeous! My hosta are sending up buds already also, as well as echinacea and rudbeckia which normally don't bloom until July. I'm a little concerned that August is going to be a sparse blooming month. I just might have to make an emergency shopping trip for annuals, maybe try out that 'Pretty Much Picasso' supertunia
Definitely odd weather this year (although, when isn't it?). My bleeding hearts did awful this year.

That Hair allium is freaky! I love it!
And your Endless Summer looks lovelier than others I have seen.

Tracy, the bleeding hearts in my neck of the woods were wonderful this year ... don't know why but not complaining. I'm also concerned that August might be sparce, but I always count on my anemone and garlic chives. Both bloom religiously in August. So far Pretty Much Picasso is a great addition, but I will offer updates as the season progresses. Thanks for stopping by.

Glad you like the allium hair, Silvana. It is freaky ... which only adds to its appeal. So, so easy. My endless summer is performing beyond my dreams. Love it when the magic works.
