It’s cold and snowy, but so, so beautiful
Don't let the draw of that cozy, warm fire keep you from venturing out into winter's cold. This season can be so amazingly beautiful . All you have to do is bundle up your skin and open your eyes to take it all the striking scenes so frequently left unnoticed. Here are some I've captured in my own yard this winter.
Symmetry of astilbe stems or hydrangea branches reaching up from the snow.
Contrast of a still colorful blue fescue versus a spent hydrangea bloom.
Carex under snow or euonymus standing strong in spite of snow.
Look up to see crisp blue skies of midday and orangey, purpley sunsets at dusk.
Look down to witness the reds of a decaying log and bark in healthy grays.
And a spring-fed pool of water that never freezes and offers fresh drinks to four-legged passers-by.
It's cold. It's snowy. Still, it is so, so beautiful.

Thanks for this reminder. I also love to observe my garden in the snow, but right now it's too darn cold, so looking out the window will have to do.

Joene, I love your photography. The crisp, clearness of it reminds me of recent days I've spent up in the Arizona mountains. Last weekend, I was able to see snow for the first time this season when I was in Sedona. But it wasn't a staying kind of snow. The weather was too warm. But I do love a new snow and the promises it leaves underneath.

Yes, I like to leave a lot of my perennials to stick up out to the snow. They provide seeds for the birds and look good, too.
Great photography - I am always amazed at some of the great and coloful sunsets we have in the Northeast.

Jackie, winter snows highlight structure in a way nothing else does. It challenges northern gardeners to foster year round, rather than just growing season, beauty.
I think the snow Sedona received was similar to what we get in late winter/early spring ... the wet, heavy stuff.
