Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day-a tardy entry

September 16, 2006 – and birthday wishes to my first-borne. Yesterday was Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day; a monthly event originated by May Dreams Gardens when garden bloggers post whatever is blooming in their gardens for everyone else to see. Travel and some computer issues (lost many photos including those of my peegee hydrangea) kept me from posting yesterday but - better late than never – here's what's blooming in joene's garden.

Moonflowers are in full glory. I planted about six vines in a large pot, gave them 6-foot tall bamboo poles to climb, watered regularly, and wound the vines around each other to create the pot of moonflowers in the photo on the right. Here the tender vines are safe from munching deer.

Anemones begin blooming in August and continue till frost.

Butterfly bushes also bring late color.

Bees love sedum and late blooming coneflowers.

Hummingbirds love morning glories.

Cosmos, phlox, scabiosa.

Ageratum, salvia, and tropical hibiscus.

Other bloomers include Black-eyed Susan, many grasses and annuals, hydrangea, other phlox, a yellow daylily that's putting out a second burst of color, garlic chives, bush beans, eggplant, cucumbers, and a volunteer sweet autumn clematis I rescued after two - perfectly centered in front of my front porch - plants succumbed to the jaws of some unknown underground creature.

Great pictures of your blooms. I am a big fan of Japanese anemone and I love your pink. The moonflower looks wonderful in a pot. I never thought of that.

Thanks, Marie. This is the first year I tried the moonflowers in a pot, and it's a practice I will continue.

- Laurrie: Your blooms are lovely and precocious I think! Like Layanee's, my clematis is only in bud, yours are so much further along. And my iris (I have Beverly Sills too) is only budding, nowhere near open yet. How different each garden is, even in the same general area. Happy Spring!

- joenesgarden: Debbie, when my boys were teens they complained about garden and yard work. Now, as adults, they seek my advice on how to do these things properly. Sometimes guidance pays off.
- Debbie: Wow, Avery's two already? I feel old! There really is nothing like gardening with a young child. Today I had my teenage sons in the garden with me - complaining about pruning and 'having' to work with me on Mother's Day, while my neighbor was out in her garden with her 2-year old daughter planting...
Love Cilantro? You Can Grow That!:
- joenesgarden: Jeannie, the plants do not like heat. You don't say where you are gardening but if you can start seeds in time for cilantro to mature in cool temperatures you may have success. Good luck.
