HGTV Officially Ceases The Gardener Guy Show

August 13, 2009. While not officially cancelled – the fer-sure kiss of death in TV lingo – HGTV has officially placed The Gardener Guy on life-support. According to his blog post on 8/10/2009, Paul James' show is no longer in production by HGTV. Those who are not aware of the online campaign designed to inform HGTV execs of the error of their ways can review my blog posts on the subject, and follow the links on these posts to the HGTV protest blog.

The good news for Gardener Guy fans is that Paul James won't disappear into oblivion, you'll just have to follow his gardening tips on his website, rather than over Sunday morning coffee. I'd like to say that HGTV has replaced his show with something better, but all I've seen is formula landscape re-dos. The expensive ones have a pool, fountain/waterfall, fire, pergola, seating area, outdoor kitchen, and a few plants scattered here and there – oh yeah, plus homeowners who are thrilled. The budget versions all seem to have a fountain/waterfall/small pond, pergola/trellis, seating/eating areas, cooking spot, and walkways with a few plants scattered here and there … and homeowners who are thrilled. No real usable info, nothing new … Yawn! Most aren't even worthy of background noise. The Internet is looking more and more enticing every time I turn on the TV.

Paul James' show was informative and entertaining. Maybe he should move to New England and go on NESN. Charlie Moore does pretty well as the Mad Fisherman. «Paul James, the outlaw gardener».

I followed Paul James years ago when he did Gardening by the Yard and thought he was fabulous! I've tried to put a gardening show together for HGTV and the last line I got from them is that all they wanted were landscape and real estate shows. Not gardening. They need to drop the G from HGTV

Teri: I agree that G is no longer part of what HGTV offers.

What a shame - he was one of the few weekend morning shows worth watching on HGTV. Teri, I agree - the G is pretty much non-existant in the line up of shows on HGTV.

- Laurrie: Your blooms are lovely and precocious I think! Like Layanee's, my clematis is only in bud, yours are so much further along. And my iris (I have Beverly Sills too) is only budding, nowhere near open yet. How different each garden is, even in the same general area. Happy Spring!

- joenesgarden: Debbie, when my boys were teens they complained about garden and yard work. Now, as adults, they seek my advice on how to do these things properly. Sometimes guidance pays off.
- Debbie: Wow, Avery's two already? I feel old! There really is nothing like gardening with a young child. Today I had my teenage sons in the garden with me - complaining about pruning and 'having' to work with me on Mother's Day, while my neighbor was out in her garden with her 2-year old daughter planting...
Love Cilantro? You Can Grow That!:
- joenesgarden: Jeannie, the plants do not like heat. You don't say where you are gardening but if you can start seeds in time for cilantro to mature in cool temperatures you may have success. Good luck.
